But this camp offers a special opportunity for children to learn  from a respected cutting edge photojournalist.

 Wen Saunders resides in Pagosa Springs, Colorado.  
She holds a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in Communications Arts & Design.  Saunders is also recognized as one of the leading wedding photojournalist in the
U.S. and credited with the re-emergence of black and white photography during wedding coverages.  Saunders has spoken numerous times at professional photography conventions and was featured as the one of twelve wedding photographers in Wedding 2000,a live video cast program in 1998.  Saunders ‘s cowboy and rodeo images were featured in American Cowboy Magazine (March/April 2004) .  Saunders’s western photographic images have been featured in the Greeley Independence Stampede Art Show in 2006 and 2007.

During day four, students will further explore unique opportunities to use and display their photographs. Students will select images from their previous shoots to make special occasion cards. Students will make a commemorative PHOTOlearn t-shirt using one of their images. Students will set-up a gallery art show of their images and prepare refreshments.  Parents will be invited to attend their gallery of images at the end of the second day and join students for a reception. Students will leave the PHOTOlearn camp with all their images and negatives.

Starting with a short history of 35mm cameras, students will see variety of vintage and modern day 35mm cameras.  Participants will learn to properly load film into their cameras. Children will use their 35mm cameras (older manual cameras are the best with detachable lens) and color film to experience the basics of photography and film exposure. Shutter speeds and f-stops will be explored and participants will record their settings when photographing. Students will shoot one roll of color film.  

A limited number of 35mm cameras are available for rent at $25, if needed.

In this session everyone will shoot two rolls of different black and white films. One tradition black and white exposed roll of film will be processed in day two. Participants will learn to properly load film into their cameras. Children will use their 35mm cameras (older manual cameras are the best with detachable lens) and color film to experience the basics of photography and film exposure. Shutter speeds and f-stops will be explored and participants will record their settings when photographing.

On day two, everyone will process one exposed black and white film (as a team).  Students will review their negatives and Wen will discuss the proper care for handling and storing negatives. They will select the best two images for framing and mounting.  Student will mount and frame their images.  Students will then choose more images for use on special occasion cards.  Participants will learn to make special occasion cards.   Wen will mail contact sheets of the processed negatives and mail to students upon class completion. (Pagosa students can make contact sheets on day three).

35mm Color Camera and Lab Processing Tour

Students will venture to a photographic lab to process their film.
Students will learn critiquing of photograph techniques and participate in a class critique, learning how to evaluate the principles of a good photograph. They will select the best two images for framing and mounting.  Students will mount and frame their images. 
Students will then choose more images for use on special occasion cards.   In addition, students will choose one image to produce a PHOTOlearn t-shirt.

35mm B/W Darkroom Making Photos
(SESSION 4)  
PAGOSA SPRINGS, COLORADO

ages 8-15

Students will make black and white contact sheets of their negatives.  Each student will choose at least one photograph and make a 5x7 enlargement.  Dodging and burning print enhancements will be demonstrated and students will apply the techniques to their photographs.  The developing process and chemicals of black and white photographs will be demonstrated and students will apply the techniques to their enlargement prints. Student will then dry mount the enlargement onto a mat board using a dry mount press.

Learn and understand the parts of a camera and how they function. 
Camera maintenance will be discussed. We’ll evaluate f-stop basics.  
You'll not only have a keen understanding of f-stop characteristics, but also discover the best f-stop decisions for the image you photograph.  

Topics include: aperture depth of field (minimum and maximum), aperture priority, proper film loading, rewinding partially exposed rolls of film for re-use, selecting the proper f-stop, digital verses film camera options, camera manufactures, and purchasing a camera, lenses, and additional equipment (resources).

F-stops and Shutter Speeds
 
 

Digital or Film Users!
Learn how to select the right shutter to help create better images.  
Advantages of slow and fast shutter speeds will be discussed. Participants will shoot an assignment during this session with provided film (black and white or color). 

Topics include: slow shutter speed effects, fast shutter speed effects, 
shutter speed camera priority, balancing shutter speed and aperture, 
logistics of shutter speed, and manually setting your shutter speed.

bouncer, fast recycle times with battery pack options, adjusting 
exposures for particular lighting conditions.

35mm B/W Infrared Film 
& B/W FILM PROCESSING  

ages high school-adult        

Infrared film can provide a very artistic rending of life's boring situations.  
If Infrared photography interests you, but you're afraid to shoot it or have 
had unsuccessful results, then you will gain a better understanding of the 
principles of infrared in this session.  Wen will discuss the "zen" of infra. 

Topics include: Effects of Infrared, The NoNos of Infra, Exposure Decisions, 
Focusing Perils, Infra Film Options (Kodak, Ilford, Konica), Infra Equipment 
(filter, camera, lenses), and B/W Infrared Processing Options. 
You'll shoot 
with black and white Infrared film, with Wen's supervision. This class always fills early!  Register now! Discover how to use this unpredictable film and how to expose properly. Participants will photograph step by step infrared subject matter.

Learn and understand the processing of black and white film with actual film processing.  Participants may bring film shot from previous classes or an exposed black and white roll of film. All processing materials are included in the fee. 

Topics include: perils of film processing, step-by-step film processing
(chart & steps provided), choosing the right film processing materials
and equipment, vendor resources for materials/equipment purchase.
