Both medium format and 35mm cameras are used in our event photojournalistic coverages.  Cameras are equipment and can malfunction.
By using so many different cameras (10-15) at the event, we are secure in capturing images of the event or photo documentation. Having more than 2-3 cameras at the event allows us to have the right film, the right lens for the right moment! If I have to think about finding the right film and lens- then the moment has just vanished!

Wen is not concerned about what is trendy.  She  just wants to document what is important for the image being captured revealing the situation.  For that reason, digital with film upgrade coverage are offered.  With film, she can capture these revealing situations with film speeds of 3200 ISO (and allowing us not to use intrusive flash).  Black and white film allows traditional darkroom photographs, lasting for generations!  Wen would rather not forgo art for technology's sake. Since her clients retain their negatives and previews, they are able to make digital images for their personal use when desired from film images.

Clients hire Wen because they are
assured she has the equipment not only to secure their images, but also to truly capture those reveling photojournalistic moments!

EQUIPMENT

Some photojournalist question whether
or not a medium format camera is necessary in today's film market.  The biggest advantage in medium format cameras is the larger negative, allowing for extensive film cropping. There will always be a certain moment where the photographer simply can not move in close enough to the subject and
negative cropping provides a creative image option. Medium format negatives allow more negative/image cropping without excessive film grain (as a 35mm negative might show).

Medium format cameras, such as the Hasselblad 503cw is especially
designed with the event photographer in mind!  Adding the film winder and eye-level prism allows a photojournalistic use of the camera.  No longer is the photographer forced to look down into
a "boxed view finder". The 503cw is designed to be used very much like a 35mm camera with light meter built into the prism.

EQUIPMENT

When I started wedding photojournalism over 30 years ago, if you used a 35mm camera your were considered a weekend warrior! The 35mm camera and their lenses have come a long way since then!  I've used 35mm cameras in wedding coverages since the start.  I found that if my newspaper buddies could capture the shot with higher speed films (especially black and white films) and a fast lens at an event- then I should be able to use the same equipment at my events- the wedding!

Today's 35mm cameras have much faster lenses and film speeds are faster as well (with less film grain). Digital 35mm cameras have excelled in their capacity. Faster lenses have larger aperture openings, allowing more light thru the lens- which means the photographer needs less light to capture the image.  The 35mm film and digital cameras are the perfect format for shooting with high film speeds and no flash (available light).

  35mm DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

D igital coverage is available!  However for archival quality black and white photographs, Wen suggests a film upgrade to the digital coverage.  Digital images are presented to the client on high resolution JPEG format onto CD, suitable for 4x6 client printing and email.

With digital images, Wen discovered severe output and production issues.  An image may view as exceptional on a computer monitor, but differently on another monitor, or the lab monitor which does not address the issue of final print output quality outside a monitor.  For quality photographs, her clients prefer to have their photographs reproduced by Wen, using today's most advanced technology and standards to produce lasting photographs.

Wen's clients understand that well over 2000+ quality images are photographed at an event.  Having a portion (about 500) of these images on film allows 4x5 photographs in a book which are included in our film upgrade for the client to keep. Her clients value those photographs and have assurance that every image is photographed and produced by WEN SAUNDERS using her years of experience to assure the finest photographic image- Digital or Film!
